PAS 9980 Finally Published

The new “publicly available specification” for fire risk appraisal and assessments of external walls, PAS 9980, has been published!

Developed by BSI, the hope is that this new standardised approach to assessing risk in the external envelope of buildings will help to bring the EWS1 debacle to an end. Despite Government optimism, it remains to be seen if PAS 9980 will solve the problem or simply replace one flawed approach with another.

Achieving an “Imperforate Layer” in Decking

A key focus in BS8579:2020, the guide to the design of balconies and terraces, is fire safety. One of the methods for fire risk mitigation outlined by the Standard is to fit “an imperforate tray or soffit” to open balconies to effectively close them and prevent fire spread.
