Barbecue causes fire on wooden balcony over Easter in Buckinghamshire

From our research last year as we prepared the Balcony Fires Report 2017 to 2020, we learned that barbecues cause a large number of fires on balconies. This fact was underlined as recently as only last week when a balcony was ignited by careless use of a barbecue in Manchester.

It comes as no surprise to hear, then, the news of a balcony fire over Easter caused by a disposable barbecue in Milton Keynes. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to a call on Easter Sunday in Broughton. Fortunately, the fire was able to be extinguished before it spread to neighbouring balconies and flats.

While the human element of recklessness will be difficult if not impossible to remove from the equation, combustible materials on balconies, such as wooden or timber decking, can easily be replaced with non-combustible alternatives. The AliDeck range of decking is tailor-made for this purpose, and using it to replace flammable decking is the surest route to fire safety on balconies.
