Discarded cigarette causes fire on combustible balcony in Cambridge
A fire was started on a balcony in Cambridge by a discarded cigarette on 3rd September. The Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the fire on Woodpecker Way, Trumpington, and found the third-floor balcony alight.
Fortunately, the fire was soon extinguished but this incident underlines the danger that combustible materials on balconies pose. Hundreds of fires on balconies are caused by discarded smoking materials each year all around the UK and there seems to be little likelihood that smokers will change their behaviour in a way that might reduce this toll.
The only feasible solution is for all combustible materials to be replaced by non-combustible alternatives. The AliDeck range of balcony decking products is 100% aluminium and A-Rated for fire safety. Retrofitting aluminium decking to balconies will immediately remove the danger of balcony decking being ignited by discarded smoking materials.
