Modular aluminium balcony kit by AliDeck is our latest solution for simple specification for balconies
A major review of building and construction standards was instigated following the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Such reviews saw the ban of combustible materials used within external walls on buildings higher than 18m, consequently affecting many mid and high-rise buildings across the UK.
Not only did this ban cause delays in new builds due to designs needing major updates and new compliant solutions needing to be found, it also the opened the floodgates for many older existing buildings needing to go through fire-safety remediation processes.
AliDeck launched the first aluminium decking boards in the UK back in 2015 and the initial reception proved extremely positive in the home improvements market. As a new landscape emerged in construction in the aftermath of Grenfell with the changes to regulations, though, we found that we had the right solution for the construction industry in our aluminium decking.
Aluminium is a non-combustible material and with fire-safety now a key factor in the decision-making of architects and fabricators, it has rapidly become the de facto standard across new build and remediation projects.
Setting the standards is a key focus for AliDeck and our trail-blazing innovations and high-quality product design are something we take much pride in. Leading the way as we do is why we made the AliDeck Balcony Kit.
To accompany the aluminium decking boards that we initially supplied, the addition of our AliClad soffit-cladding and AliRail metal balustrade systems combine to create a modular, off-the-shelf balcony component kit. Balcony manufacturers have long recognised the value in using kit-form components to create a simple, quick fix and easy-to-install system and a hybrid arrangement of aluminium components with steel balcony framework is proving a revolutionary step forward for the industry.
Resistant to the elements, our aluminium components will not fall foul to age and decay. Aluminium decking comes with a 60-year life-expectancy, far greater in comparison to its traditional counterparts such as timber and composite decking and significantly reduces the need for additional maintenance and remediation costs in the future, requiring only simple cleaning.
One of the most striking aspects of the AliDeck Balcony Kit solution is the phenomenal weight savings available. Compared to a fully steel balcony, balconies that consist of steel frame internals and AliDeck decking, soffit cladding and balustrade have proven to offer a greater than 50% weight reduction, a significant saving especially on larger projects!
When specifying materials, weight is always a concern. Aluminium is much lighter than other architectural metals, especially steel, while still being extremely strong. With the extreme weight savings available via the AliDeck Balcony Kit and the consequent lower imposed load, building designs can be streamlined significantly.
You can see the results for yourself in a recent case study of where we visited a new-build development in Sheffield where our balcony kit of aluminium decking, soffit cladding, and balustrade was installed to steel cantilever balconies.
We are really pleased to be able to see our AliDeck, AliClad and AliRail balcony component systems coming together like this, with aluminium continuing to pave the way to success for all stakeholders.
